What happened: A mini bus carrying pilgrims from West Bengal overturned on the Ganga Expressway near Aihar, in the Lalganj kotwali area of Raebareli, early on Sunday, 1 November 2026. Lalganj Circle Officer Sujeet Rai told ETV Bharat that 11 people were injured. Amar Ujala reported more than eight passengers with serious injuries. The injured, including women and children, were taken by UPEIDA ambulance to the community health centre (CHC).
The two reports differ on some details. Amar Ujala placed the crash at kilometre 486 near the Aihar toll plaza and said 26 pilgrims were on board, travelling to Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi after visiting Mathura and Vrindavan. The CO told ETV Bharat the crash took place at the 490 km point and that the group, all from Kolkata, was heading from Mathura towards Prayagraj. Amar Ujala reported that most passengers were asleep and that the bus slid about 100 metres before hitting the divider. ETV Bharat said the driver was reported to have dozed off. Police have not confirmed the cause and say they are investigating.
Why it matters: The Ganga Expressway passes through Lalganj and nearby villages, and Aihar residents and the CHC are often first to respond when something goes wrong on this stretch. Long distance tourist buses use the road through the night, when drivers are most tired. Families in Lalganj, Sareni and Khiron who use the expressway to reach Prayagraj and Lucknow share the road with these vehicles.
Honest opinion: A crash in the early hours, with most passengers asleep, points to driver fatigue as the main question for investigators, though police have not said so. Pilgrim groups often hire one driver for very long routes to keep costs low, and passengers bear the risk. Local coverage rarely follows up on the condition of injured travellers once they leave the district. Expect police to complete their inquiry and the injured to be shifted to bigger hospitals or sent home within a few days. Confidence: medium.
What you should do: If you travel on the expressway at night, take a break every two hours and do not drive when drowsy. In an emergency, call 112 for police and 108 for an ambulance, and note the kilometre stone so help can reach you fast. If you are hiring a bus for a pilgrimage, ask the operator whether a second driver will be on board.
