Rain halts pothole repairs as 150 roads stay rough

What happened: Two days of rain have stopped pothole repairs on Raebareli roads, and about 150 roads are still in poor shape, Amar Ujala reported on 2 November 2026. Earlier rain damaged about 355 roads in the district. The repair work is worth about Rs 10 crore, and the state government has set a deadline of 10 November. Residents in the Maharajganj, Lalganj and Salon areas say the bad roads cause falls and injuries. Students travelling to school and college are among the worst hit. Public Works Department Executive Engineer Mahipal Singh told the paper that most roads are done and the rest will be finished on time once the rain stops. The current halt and the figure of 150 roads come from Amar Ujala alone.

Why it matters: In October, Hindustan reported that 352 roads covering 764 km were damaged. By 10 October, only 244 km, or about 32 percent, had been patched. About 520 km remained. Work is spread across the Provincial division and Construction divisions 1 and 2, with state roads first. Funds have been released. Bad roads slow ambulances, school buses and farm traffic, and the festival rush starts this week. With paddy purchase also starting, tractors and trolleys will use these roads heavily. Heavy loads on weak patches can widen the potholes again within days.

Honest opinion: The 10 November deadline now looks hard to meet in full. Patch work needs dry roads, and only about eight days remain. Past years show that rushed patches often break up within months. The department should publish a road by road list so people know what is done and what is pending. Residents of Maharajganj, Lalganj and Salon will judge the work by their daily ride, not by the figures. Confidence: medium.

What you should do: Drive slowly on village and link roads, and take extra care at night and after rain. Report a dangerous pothole on the IGRS Jansunwai portal, with the road name, the nearest village and a clear photo. Complaints with exact details are easier for engineers to act on. Parents can ask schools to plan safer bus routes until repairs end. If a road near you is still broken after 10 November, raise it at the tehsil Samadhan Diwas.
