What happened: Unchahar police seized about 110 kg of firecrackers from a site near the bus stop in Unchahar town on Sunday night, 1 November 2026. Police arrested the man who kept the stock. Dainik Bhaskar says the crackers were in a rented godown, while Amrit Vichar says they were inside a grocery shop at the bus station. Both papers say the crackers were packed in six sacks and a plastic bag. Bhaskar reports that police made the arrest at about 9:05 pm IST.
Why it matters: Police say Sub-Inspector Manish Kumar Jaiswal led the raid after a tip-off during a night patrol. According to police, the accused runs a grocery shop and said he had bought the crackers to sell for profit during Diwali. He could not show any licence to store or sell them. Kotwal Manbodh Tiwari said on Monday that the stock was seized and sealed and a case was registered. Bhaskar reports the case under Section 5/9(B) of the Explosives Act. Police also photographed and filmed the action. The bus stop area is one of the busiest spots in Unchahar. Commuters, students, shopkeepers and vendors pass through it every day. A fire in a store full of crackers could spread fast to nearby shops and crowds. We are not naming the accused, as he has not been convicted.
Honest opinion: The seizure comes a week before Diwali on 8 November, when unlicensed storage tends to rise in small towns. It signals that police are watching cracker stocks in market areas. More raids are likely in Unchahar, Lalganj, Salon and other towns over the next few days. Licensed sellers gain from tighter checks. Small grocers who keep crackers without papers risk a case and the loss of their goods. The reports do not say where the crackers came from or whether any supplier is under watch. The district administration has also begun the process for temporary licences, with forms due on 3 November. Our confidence in this view is medium.
What you should do: If you see crackers stored in a house, shop or godown in a crowded lane, tell the police on 112 or call Unchahar kotwali. If you want to sell crackers this season, apply for a temporary licence through the City Magistrate in Raebareli city or your tehsil SDM office in rural areas. Buy crackers only from licensed shops at sites marked by the administration.
