Ration card holders may get Rs 5 lakh cashless treatment

Patients in a hospital ward in India

What happened: Ration card holders in Raebareli may soon get cashless treatment of up to Rs 5 lakh in government and private hospitals. District Supply Officer Ubaidurrahman shared the plan with Dainik Jagran and Amrit Vichar on Saturday, 31 October 2026. The district has 5,60,904 ration cards, which cover 21,87,926 people. Under the plan, special cards will be made for these families. A nodal officer will be named for the work. The district’s 1,131 ration dealers, known as kotedars, will spread awareness. Camps will be held in every ward, and health department staff will help. The officer made it clear that no government letter has arrived yet. Work will start as soon as the order comes.

Why it matters: The plan is part of a wider state proposal. Prabhat Khabar reported on 22 October 2026 that the Uttar Pradesh Government is considering linking all 3.63 crore ration cards in the state with the Ayushman Bharat health scheme. That would cover about 14.61 crore people. The report says the proposal has in-principle approval. The cost may reach about Rs 15,000 crore a year, and funds may be arranged in the winter session of the state legislature. The start date and the rules on who qualifies have not been decided. For poor families in Raebareli, one hospital stay can wipe out years of savings. A cashless card could change that.

Honest opinion: This could help lakhs of families in the district, but for now it is only a plan. Until the state issues a formal order, nobody can say when cards will be made or who will get them. The scheme will work only if enough private hospitals join and get paid on time. Clear rules and a simple process will matter as much as the money. Confidence: medium.

What you should do: Do not pay anyone who offers to make a health card for money. No official process has started yet. Visit your ration shop and check that the names of all family members on your card are correct and linked to Aadhaar. Watch for notices about official camps in your ward or village. If you already have an Ayushman card, keep using it as before. If someone asks you for money in the name of this scheme, complain at the district supply office or on the Jansunwai portal.
