What happened: Painting and repair work has started on the historic bridge over the Sai river at Munshiganj in Raebareli, Dainik Bhaskar reported on Monday, 2 November 2026. Broken barricades on the bridge are also being fixed. The work follows an inspection by District Magistrate Sarnit Kaur Broca. KNS Live reported that during her visit on 10 October, she asked officials to repair and paint the pedestrian bridge near the Shaheed Smarak, and to add dustbins, lights on both sides and signboards. She also asked them to study building a ghat there under a long term plan.
Why it matters: Munshiganj is one of the most important places in Raebareli’s history. On 7 January 1921, British forces fired on unarmed farmers gathered on the banks of the Sai, and the event is often called a second Jallianwala Bagh. Bhaskar puts the toll at about 700, though historical accounts give different figures. Bhaskar reports that the iron footbridge was built in 1989, under then Chief Minister Narayan Dutt Tiwari, and that it has been in poor shape. For years the river here was covered with water hyacinth, which blocked the flow and caused a bad smell. Volunteers from the social group Suniye Katha Raghunath Ki cleared the weed. The DM praised the public effort to clean the river, KNS Live said. Additional District Magistrate (Administration) Siddharth and Nagar Palika Executive Officer Swarn Singh were present at the inspection.
Honest opinion: The work is a useful step for a site that draws visitors every year. Walkers, cyclists and residents of nearby villages who use the footbridge gain first. Reports do not give a budget, a deadline or the name of the agency doing the work. Paint and lights need regular upkeep, and past cleanups of the Sai have not lasted without follow up. The 7 January anniversary gives a clear date to judge progress, and the ghat plan is likely to take longer. Confidence: medium.
What you should do: If you cross the footbridge, take care near the sections under repair, and keep children away from the barricades. Do not throw waste or puja material into the river. If lights or dustbins are damaged after the work, report it to the Nagar Palika Parishad office or on the IGRS portal, jansunwai.up.gov.in.
